Archery Equipment

Are you baffled and bewildered by all of the archery equipment out there? If you can’t quite wrap your head around everything that you will need, this article will help you to work it all out.

Let’s face it – walking into a sports shop and confronting an experienced archer is entirely intimidating. But how can you get all the archery equipment that you will need without asking? Well, you can start by reading through this article. Also, it will help if you grab a pen and a piece of paper, so that you can make a list to bring to that sports store. Let’s start with a list of all the things you’ll need followed by a bit of a description outlining each one.

You will have to have some type of a bow (longbow, recurve bow, or compound bow); one set of arrows (wood, fiber glass, aluminum, or carbon); an arm protector; and gloves. There are many other things that you can add to your set, but these are the basics. Now, let’s talk about those bows. The bow has been around since the time of the caveman, and if you want one that resembles the ones those cavemen used to have, you’ll be happy with a longbow. In fact, the longbow hasn’t actually changed its shape since 9,000 B.C. (why mess with a good thing?). Contrastingly, recurve bows are slightly more advanced.

Recurve bows tend to range from 1220mm to 1780mm in length, so it really depends upon the type of bow that you are comfortable with. The weight of this bow is usually placed on the back of the piece, and most of these are made from laminated timber. Different types of timber will give the bow a different feel. Lastly, the compound bow is adjustable weight wise, which makes it slightly better for those that are not used to one weight or another. Of course, you can’t talk about archery equipment without touching upon those arrows for a moment or two.

Wood arrows are cheap, but they must be made to order if you plan to compete. Fiber glass arrows are lightweight and consistent, but they tend to break easily. Aluminum arrows are very expensive, which is why they are used for tournaments only, though they are very durable. Carbon bows are fast, extremely expensive, and used for detrimental tournaments only.

Now that you know about the basic types of archery equipment out there, you can begin to search for your own. Take your list to that sports store, try a few out, and decide which ones are right for you.
