How to Make an Archery Bow
Do you want to learn how to make an archery bow? While this craft can be quite challenging, it can also be extremely rewarding.
There is just something wonderful about knowing how to make an archery bow. Even if you do not plan to hunt with it, imagine the thrill of practicing your sport with a bow that you have made. To begin, you must first choose the right wood to use for your bow. There are numerous woods to choose from including ash, yew, or bamboo. Then, you will have to gather a sharp carving knife, some bow string and the wood that you have chosen (make sure that it is straight).
Hopefully you have a few carving skills, since you will need them... carve the wood into a shape that resembles a boomerang. Next, you will also have to carve out some arrows. Arrows are relatively straightforward, but if you want to purchase some plans from a hunting store these may come in handy. Remember that your arrows must fit the bow, so don’t make them too short or too wide. Once you have finished carving the bow, etch two notches onto either side of the bow, and place the string through them.
Believe it or not, learning how to make an archery bow is not the hard part. What is difficult about this process happens to be the string. If your string is too tight or too loose, those arrows will not fly as they should. Test your bow quite a few times before you decide on the string that you will use. Once all elements are put together, you may have to go back and sand out a few of the edges. Since you have carved this piece from wood, it is inevitable that there will be a few rough spots.
As you can see, this process is not too time consuming. In the end, you should be able to create the perfect piece within just a few days. Of course, you will have to have some basic carving skills in order to do this, but those can be learnt. Also, you may find that detailed blueprints help, so go ahead and purchase these if you so desire.
Now that you know roughly how to make an archery bow, make sure to pass the knowledge on. You will find that hunting and shooting with a tool that you crafted is as rewarding as life can get.
